🕊️ About the Church
History of St Peter’s Parish – Oysterbay
St Peter’s Catholic Parish is located on Haile Selassie Road, opposite the Protea Hotel, within the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam.
The origin of the parish goes back to a small fishing village by the Indian Ocean in Msasani, where a small grass thatched chapel once stood under a large baobab tree.
This chapel is believed to have been founded around 1952, served by Msgr. John Francis Dennis from St Joseph’s Cathedral, together with catechists who prepared Christians for the sacraments of baptism, communion, and confirmation.
Growth of the Parish
As the city of Dar es Salaam grew, the number of Catholics also increased.
The faithful began meeting for worship in a rented house near the intersection of Old Msasani and Karume Roads.
From this humble beginning, St Peter’s Parish was born, and priests from St Joseph’s Cathedral provided pastoral care.
In 1958, Oysterbay was officially declared a full parish, with Msgr. John Francis Dennis as its first parish priest.
